Units and Offices within SG

Student Government is a broad group with a many sub-units and offices. This document attempts to briefly explain their interrelationship.

Units

  • Student Government. Student Government (SG not SGA) includes units such as the Student Senate, the Judicial Boards, and the Executive Branch. The term doesn't including external governing groups such as the IRC, SMA, or the College Councils.
  • Student Senate. The popularly elected student legislature.
  • Judicial Board. Judicial panel that hears cases under the Code of Student Conduct.
  • Executive Branch. All officials and units reporting to the Student Body President, including those indirectly through the Treasurer or Senate President (as vice-president).
  • Cabinet. The administrative council or executive board of the Executive Branch.
  • Committee. Typical refers to one of several committees of Student Senators. Sometimes used in the general sense for any group of 3-20 sg officials working on project.
  • Commission. Commission (Student Body Commissions) are committees of the Executive Branch.
  • Department/Division. A hierarchical administrative unit of the Executive Branch with considerable independant authority.
  • Executive Staff. Any of several groups of assistants reporting to one of the elected executive officers.

Offices

  • Student Body President. CEO of SG, and student member of the Board of Trustees.
  • Student Senate President. Chairman of the Student Senate and vice-president of SG.
  • Student Body Vice-President. Occasionally used in reference to the Student Senate President. Proper title is "Student Senate President".
  • Student Body Treasurer. CFO of SG, in charge of the Treasury and a member of the Senate.
  • Student Chief Justice. Head officer of the Judicial Board.
  • Student Senate President Pro Tempore. Vice-president of the Student Senate; seniormost office held by a Student Senator.
  • Student Body Comptroller. SG's student accountant.
  • Director. The head of one of several departments and divisions. Senior officers of the Executive Branch.
  • Chair. Either the head of one of the Senate committees and a senior officer of the Senate; or the head of an executive commission.
  • Judicial Assistant. Officers of the Judical Board.
  • Chief of Staff. The head of the decretionary assistants working for an elected officer.
  • Executive Assistant. Typically, the top staff aide to the Student Body President.
  • Student Senator. Elected representive of some portion of the student body.
  • Coordinator. Title commonly given to descretionary staffers of the elected officers.
