Getting Involved in SG

Student Government is a large organization with opportunities for service available to students with differing commitments, interests, and abilities. Students are involved in policy-making, adjudication, programming, lobbying, community service, and countless other activities. However, from the most senior executive to the most junior volunteer, Student Government is united in its commitment to bettering the student university experience.

First-Year Student Opportunities

Student Senate

The Student Senate reserves 11 of its 64 seats for first-year undergraduate students, and 2 seats for new graduate students. These 13 seats are elected in the fall general election. For more on the Senate, please see elsewhere in this brochure.

Wolf Aides Program

Student Government operates a freshman leadership development program entitled Wolf Aides. This fall semester program aims to give freshman the knowledge and tools necessary to become successful student leaders. The program provides a thorough overview of both Student Government and the University Administration. A number of Wolf Aides have went on to become Student Body and Student Senate Officers.

Opportunities for All Students

Student Senate

Student Senate has long been the core of the Student Government. Each of the 64 Student Senators represents students of a particular college or classification. Most Senators are elected in the spring, although first-year undergraduate and graduate students are elected in the fall. Vacant seats are filled by appointment. Current vacancies are posted on the Student Government website.

Student Senate is a deliberative body, adopting measures via formal legislative rules. Senate is directly responsible for the appropriation of the student body funds, and makes recommendations on a great number of university polices. Senate Committees, on which all Senators serve, investigate student concerns and prepare Senate business. Many Senators are involved in projects throughout SG.

Executive Branch

The Executive Branch of Student Government is its fastest growing, composed of units and officials working either directly or indirectly for the Student Body President. Within this branch, there is the greatest variety in responsibility, ranging from executive authority over a department to volunteer participation. From time-to-time the President will solicit applications for leadership positions within the subdivisions of the Branch.

The President’s core assistants make up his or her Staff, the Executive Office of the Student Body President, and work on special projects and initiatives of the President. The President typically adds to the Staff as projects and people emerge.

At any given time, there are usually several Student Body Commissions operating. These committees of the Student Body serve to execute programs or gather student opinion. A few Commissions organize major service projects. Many commissions have no formal limit to the number of volunteer students who may sit as members.

Students may also become involved in Student Body Departments. Presently, this includes organizations such as the Department of Government Relations, which liaises with government bodies, and the Department of Community Service, which organizes a variety of service projects.

Judicial Boards

The Student Judicial Boards hear and deliberate on cases of alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct, including academic integrity violations. Board members also assist complainants and respondents through the judicial process. Frequently members become involved in academic integrity educational outreach efforts. The Boards conduct a selection process each spring.

Participating

Student Government strives to effectively represent all students. Even if you choose not to take an office, there are many ways you can participate in student governance on campus:

  • Serve on University Standing Committees
University Standing Committees are advisory bodies comprised of faculty, staff, and students, dealing with many University areas. Students are appointed by the Student Body President.
  • Subscribe to the Howl
The Howl is SG's electronic mailing list, to which the Student Body President sends announcements related to SG and campus issues. To subscribe, visit http://students.ncsu.edu/home/howl.php.
  • Vote in the Elections
You can influence the direction of Student Government by voting in the Spring Elections the first week of April and the Leader-of-the-pack elections the week of homecoming. The 2001-2002 Student Body President won by only 8 votes, so your vote can make a difference.
