Committee Minutes, Tuesday, September 29th 2009

Senator Sarah Center submitted the following report to the Student Senate on Tuesday, September 29th 2009, on behalf of the Public Affairs Committee, and pursuant to its Tuesday, September 29th 2009 recommendations:

Attendance:

There were four (4) members (Jasmine Brown, Center, Daughtry, Kouba) present.

There were no members absent.

The following official was also present: Hayes.

A quorum was present.

Meeting Overview:

This meeting was called to draft the formal invitation to guest speakers and to brainstorm the discussion topics for the Senators.

Senator Center called the meeting to order

-- A nomination was made to appoint Senator Hayes Public Affairs Committee Secretary
-- A nomination was made to appoint Senator Kouba as Public Affairs Vice-Chair
-- Guest Speakers at the 10/28 & 11/18
Senator Tony Rand and Richard Stevens have accepted an invitation to speak during Senate Meetings on the following dates: Sen. Rand: Oct 28, Sen. Stevens: Nov 18th
Sen. Rand is the Senate Majority Leader.
Center: What will be discussed?
Brown: What does he do?
Kouba: Rand is the Majority Leader and controls the agenda and is the Rules Chairman and sets the rules. Will talk later about the details of their visit.
Center: Who would talk about tuition increase?
Kouba: Talk to both, either can help.
Daughtry: Keep discussion about how they started, and personal background, what was their plans, etc… Need time restraints… Senators should have time to speak to actual Senators
Kouba: Getting background is a good point
(Other points were made to make sure Student Senators would benefit from hearing from them)
A point was made to ask them how to control large meetings
Open to the floor to ask questions
Center: Committee members need to have “safety questions” in case the general assembly runs out of questions
-- Formal Invitation was drafted to the Senators
-- Email and Invitation sent to be edited
