Frequent Questions
This page has been set up as a repository for common questions regarding SG.
Q: Is Student Government SGA?
A: While fullfilling the roles traditional to an SGA (Student Government Association), NCSU Student Government is not one, and the abbreviation SGA is improper and should be avoided. This organization should always be referred to as either "Student Government" or "SG". The more formal "Student Body Government" is also acceptable.
Student Government Associations are organized on the basis of granting all students ipso facto memberships in a Student Government Association, and then establishing a governing system of that association. A Student Body Government, such as NCSU's SG, instead use the more direct method of declaring the Student Body itself to be a unit, of which the Student Government is the governing system. In such system, one finds much more frequent use of the term Student Body, e.g. Student Body Budget and Student Body Constitution.
Q: How do I get money from SG?
A: Student Senate is responsible for allocating SG money, known as Student Body Funds. To be elgible for appropriation in most all cases, you much be a Registered Student Organization. Each spring and fall the Senate makes rountine organizational appropriations through an application process. The Senate will occasionally make a special appropriation for an event, program, or activity of special value to the Student Body. Interested parties should contact a Student Senator or the Student Body Treasurer.
The Student Body Budget is funded almost entirely by student fees, and support of other student organization activities is a major purpose of the funds. Organizations affliated with departments and colleges should also explore funding options with their College Councils.
Q: How do I become involved in SG?
A: Opportunities for service in SG frequently become available, for people of all experiences and ablities. Major applications can be found on the Online Application page, and more information on involvment can be found on the getting involved page.
Q: When does Student Government meet?
A: Student Government as a whole does not meet. The Student Senate is the primary decision-making body, and meets on alternating Wednesdays. Its committees oftentimes meet on the off-Wednesdays. Student Body Commissions, the Presidential Cabinet, and other executive units do not maintain regular meeting schedules. The meeting calendar has up-to-date information on meetings.
Student Government is committed to decision making in public, and all meetings of the Senate, Senate Committees, and Student Body Commissions are open to the public, except as permitted by law.
