RESOLUTION 55

A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT TO SUPPORT FUNDING FROM THE 2001-2002 TUITION INCREASE TO BE ALLOCATED TO THE NCSU VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAMS

 

Short Title: Funding of Art Programs. (Public)

WHEREAS, the ARTS NC STATE visual and performing arts programs provide anessential component to the complete education of NC State students; and,

WHEREAS, the visual and performing arts programs deeply enrich the cultural and intellectual life on our campus; and,

WHEREAS, a fee increase for the Student Center was not approved for the 2001-2002 academic year; and,

WHEREAS, the ARTS NC STATE visual and performing arts programs, which are funded through the Student Center fee, are severely under funded and understaffed; and most particularly,

WHEREAS, the NCSU Music Department, which serves approximately 2,000 students each year, is in need of one additional staff person to serve as a building, equipment and instrument coordinator for Price Music Center; and,

WHEREAS, University Theatre, which has earned critical acclaim for mounting extraordinary student productions, is in serious need of one additional technical employee to help run, maintain and improve the condition of Stewart Theatre; and,

WHEREAS, the Gallery of Art & Design, in order to fulfill its mission to broaden NC State students’ understanding and perspective of art, particularly those art forms most native to North Carolina and the South, has a pressing need for a full-time Curator for Education and Outreach; and,

WHEREAS, The Crafts Center, the premiere crafts program at any university in the Southeast United States, has experienced a remarkable increase in usage by students, particularly those in the Colleges of Education and Design, and is an asset to all NC State students, in order to maintain safe operating conditions is in dire need of an additional staff person; and,

WHEREAS, the cost of adding these four new staff positions would be approximately $130,000; and,

WHEREAS, inflation and increased operating costs have dramatically and negatively affected the operating budgets of the visual and performing arts programs; and, 

WHEREAS, with the addition of these new positions students throughout the entire University will receive immediate benefits; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate supports the allocation of funding from the 2001-02 tuition increase funds to be used to fund one additional staff position in each of the following ARTS NC STATE programs:

  1. NCSU Crafts Center
  2. NCSU Music Department
  3. University Theatre
  4. NCSU Gallery of Art & Design; and, be it further

RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate supports the allocation of funding from the 2001-02 tuition increase funds to be used to provide an additional $70,000 in annual operating support to the NC State visual and performing arts programs.
