A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT TO ALLOCATE FUNDS TO THE YOUTH FOR JUSTICE NOW CONFERENCE

Short Title: Justice Now Conference Funding Act. (Public)

WHEREAS, there is concern among some student groups that recent developments in the criminal justice system are negatively affecting the youth of North Carolina; and,

WHEREAS, the total population of incarcerated persons in America has increased past 2 million; and,

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina contracts the use of prison space to out of state firms, which is a matter that is of concern to some student groups; and,

WHEREAS, Youth for Justice Now! Is a conference lead by and focusing on young people, which understands that issues within the criminal justice system pose different problems for different communities, and will attempt to fully explore the problems on a basis of age, race, gender, sexuality, and class; and,

WHEREAS, the conference will be on the campus of North Carolina State University during the weekend of February 16-18, to explore solutions to current problems in the prison system; and,

WHEREAS, the conference will provide an opportunity to learn and talk about the problems facing prisons today, and how people from across North Carolina can work to solve them together; and,

WHEREAS, this conference is currently sponsored by Knowledge, Wisdom and Understanding (KWU), Campus in Action (CIA), and the African American Cultural Center at North Carolina State University; now, therefore be it

ENACTED, by the North Carolina State University Student Senate that two-thousand dollars ($2000) from line item 1301, Student Government General Activities Fund, be allocated to Campus in Action for funding of the Youth for Justice Now! Conference.
