RESOLUTION 57
A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT ENCOURAGING THE UNIVERSITY TO SUPPORT THE CREATION AND EXECUTION OF A RACIAL CLIMATE SURVEY.
Short Title: Racial Climate Survey Act. (Public)

WHEREAS, North Carolina State University is a land-grant institution whose mission is to educate the sons and daughters of North Carolina; and,
WHEREAS, a modern institution of higher learning, such as North Carolina State University, must embrace the value of diversity and toleration; and,
WHEREAS, Chancellor Fox stated the importance of these values at North Carolina State University in an address on October 19, 1998, stating:
"All of us, faculty, staff, administrators, and students, must work together to build a community that is inclusive and welcoming to all people, both tolerating and celebrating these personal characteristics. Only then can NC State achieve its mission …";
and,
WHEREAS, the successful implementation of a racial climate survey requires a collaborative effort among students, faculty, staff, and administrators; and,
WHEREAS, a group of North Carolina State University students, faculty, staff and administrators is currently formulating a racial climate survey; and
WHEREAS, undertaking a racial climate survey will emphatically demonstrate the university's commitment to improving the racial climate at North Carolina State University; and,
WHEREAS, a racial climate survey will quantifiably assess the current status of relations between races and ethnic groups at North Carolina State University; and,
WHEREAS, the results of a racial climate survey will be presented to various administrative units and students in an open forum intended to make the campus more aware of how students feel about the racial climate at North Carolina State University; and,
WHEREAS, the results of a racial climate survey could be used by various administrative units and student groups to formulate policies and programs to improve the racial climate at North Carolina State University; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate emphatically applauds and supports the work of students, faculty, staff and administrators to implement a racial climate survey; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate beseeches Chancellor Fox and North Carolina State University to grant their full support to the implementation of a racial climate survey; and, be it further
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate calls on Chancellor Fox to provide funding and resources for the implementation of a racial climate survey.
