RESOLUTION 24
A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE STUDENT LEGAL FEE INCREASE
Short Title: Student Legal Services Fee Increase. (Public)

WHEREAS, the department of Student Legal Services is requesting a $2.00 fee increase; and,
WHEREAS, Student Legal Services is a non-profit organization created by Student
Government in 1987 to meet the legal needs of the Student Body; and,
WHEREAS, Student Legal Services takes on approximately 2200 cases a year and
must upgrade their part time lawyer to full time status to maintain the current case load; and,
WHEREAS, Student Legal Services serves as a legal and educational resource to the more than 300 student organizations on the campus of NC State University; and.
WHEREAS, Student Legal Services rely solely on student fees for funds; and,
WHEREAS, Student Legal Services has not had a fee increase since 1995 and are in
dire need of funds so that they can continue to represent students at their
current capacity; and,
WHEREAS, Student Legal Services has been forced to exhaust its reserve fund, simply to maintain the office's day-to-day operations; and,
WHEREAS, funding needed to maintain vital personnel needed for the office's efficient operation has not been available; and,
WHEREAS, this lack of funding has led to the layoff of needed staff and a decrease in student work hours; now; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State Student Senate strongly supports the Student
Legal Services fee increase of $2.00 beginning with the next academic year; and; therefore be it further
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate opposes cutting
this fee increase by any amount due to the absolute necessity of this increase.
