WHEREAS, the University Student Center is requesting a $10.00 fee increase; and,
WHEREAS, the fee that supports the Student Center Operations has not been increased since FY 1996/1997; and,
WHEREAS, during this time, salaries for permanent employees have increased by 21.7% due to legislative increases; and,
WHEREAS, during that same period of time, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers for the Southern Urban region has increased by 16.2%; and,
WHEREAS, while the fees have remained constant, the cost of personnel goods and services has gone up each year; and,
WHEREAS, while the Student Center Operations fee has remained constant, labor costs have increase by 21.7%, and inflation has increased at 16.2%, the requested increase of $10.00 represents an increase of only 7.34%; and,
WHEREAS, the student center has explored numerous options over the last five years to generate revenue for their budget without requesting an increase, (including revenues from University Dining, Copy Center, ATM's, Center for Ethics, Leadership, and Public Service, Games Room, and Rental of Talley Student Center space); and,
WHEREAS, this increase in revenue generated has caused the Student Center Operations to be less dependent on student fees now than they were five years ago; and,
WHEREAS, without this increase, the University Student Center's programming, operating hours, and support services will have to be cut to stay within their budget; now; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate supports the Student Center Operations fee increase of $10.00 beginning with the next academic year; and; therefore, be it further
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate applauds the Student Centers efforts in generating revenue; and encourages the University Student Center to continue in its efforts to generate more revenue to subsidize future and current mandated increases, as well as to
maintain the services they currently provide.
