A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED
An act to commend former provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Stuart L. Cooper for his Steadfast resolve in the face of adversity

WHEREAS, Dr. Stuart L. Cooper became Provost and Vice
Chancellor for Academic Affairs in August 2001, the result of an extensive and
competitive nationwide search; and,
WHEREAS, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox instructed Provost Stuart Cooper
to solicit the resignations of or terminate the employment of Senior Vice
Provost Frank Abrams and Vice Provost Bruce Mallette on Monday, January 6th;
and,
WHEREAS, Provost Cooper informed Chancellor Fox on the
morning of Tuesday, January 7th that he did not agree with
terminating Vice Provosts Abrams and Cooper and would not do so; and,
WHEREAS, Chancellor Fox blatantly disregarded the
desires and advice of Provost Cooper regarding his senior staff by terminating
the employment of Vice Provosts Abrams and Mallette in the early afternoon of
Tuesday, January 7th; and,
WHEREAS, Provost Cooper was placed in an untenable position by
Chancellor Fox’s callous actions, and,
WHEREAS, instead of terminating two highly capable and respected
administrators, Provost Cooper selflessly resigned from his position as
Provost; and,
WHEREAS, North Carolina State University has a strong tradition of
administrators who respect the principles of honor, integrity and steadfast
desire to serve student interests, and Provost Stuart Cooper has in every way
fulfilled this tradition through his actions in this unfortunate circumstance;
now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that
the North Carolina State University Student Senate lauds and praises Dr. Stuart
Cooper for his selfless dedication to North Carolina State University and the
principles upon which it was founded.
