RESOLUTION 50
A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED
An Act TO CALL for THE Formation of an alterative feasibility research committee (AFRC) to investigate equitable alternatives to the use of killed animals and develop policies protecting the undergraduate learning experience.

WHEREAS, it is in the interest of the student body and alumni of North Carolina State University, and citizens of the state of North Carolina, to keep the integrity of a curriculum and degree at North Carolina State University at the highest possible level; and,
WHEREAS, alternatives, including but not limited to interactive, life size models, illustrations, photographs, books, CD-ROM simulations and videos, currently exist and are readily available through various organizations and databases; and,
WHEREAS, the nonanimal alternatives would not change or remove the current learning methods of traditional animal study but rather an alternate option would be offered in addition to the current curriculum; and,
WHEREAS, the interest of students is to learn the educational content of the course in ways that do not violate their conscientiously held beliefs, and according to the University of North Carolina Board of Governors, “No constituent institution shall abridge either the freedom of students engaged in the responsible pursuit of knowledge or their right to fair and impartial evaluation of their academic performance”; and,
WHEREAS, accordingly, faculty members must “enhance the intellectual horizons of the students” and not discriminate based upon “religion…political affiliation, ethnic identity, life style, or other activities unrelated to academic achievement”; now, therefore be it,
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate strongly requests that the University investigates the said alternatives and assure their appropriate implementation if they are feasible through the development of an Alternative Feasibility Research Committee (AFRC) composed of 1 standing committee member on CALS curriculum, 1 Standing Committee member on University Curriculum, 1 Standing Committee member on CNR Curriculum, 1 Faculty Senate Academic Committee, 1 Student Senate Academic Committee, 1 faculty member from CALS, 1 student rep from Agri-Life Council, all appointed by their respective group ; and, be it further,
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate request the AFRC provide a public report of their findings.
