RESOLUTION 18

 

A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT TO CALL UPON THE UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION TO IMMEDIATELY CREATE A TUITION TASK FORCE

 

WHEREAS,    on January 11, 2002, the Board of Governors endorsed five-year planning for tuition and fees; and,

 

WHEREAS,    on March 6, 2002, the Board of Governors approved a $300.00 campus-initiated tuition increase for North Carolina State University; and,

 

WHEREAS,    the Board of Governors also approved an 8 percent across-the-board increases for in-state students and a 12 percent across-the-board increase for out-of-state students; and,

 

WHEREAS,    the Board of Governors determined that these tuition increases would be the first year in a five year plan for University tuition and fees; and,

 

WHEREAS,    since March 6, little progress has been made on forming a campus tuition task force; and,

 

WHEREAS,    the Board of Governors has requested that five-year plans be submitted to the Board for their October 2002 meeting; and,

 

WHEREAS,    further delay will prevent adequate levels of student involvement in the tuition planning; and,

 

WHEREAS,    the Report of the Task Force on Tuition Policy mandates that the university “should make every effort to ensure a high degree of student consultation and input into the process;” and,

 

WHEREAS,    potential budget cuts by the North Carolina General Assembly have inhibited the University administration in forming a campus tuition task force; and,

 

WHEREAS,    potential budget cuts should not preclude students, faculty and staff of North Carolina State University from accessing the current needs of the university and the student body; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED,  that the North Carolina State University student senate implores the University Administration to immediately establish a tuition task force to be comprised of the following:

·      Co-chairs: Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Student Body President

·      One member of the Board of Trustees–selected by the Board of Trustees

·      Director of Office of Financial Aid

·      Three designees of the Chancellor

·      Four students at large, including (at least) one graduate student appointed by the Student Body President.
