A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED
An act CAlling for the creation of a task force with the purpose of EVAluating and reshaping the admissions CRITERIA

WHEREAS, it should be the primary goal of any public
university to review the application process in order to review the entire
student for undergraduate admission into the institution; and,
WHEREAS, a successful college student typically exhibits qualities
that cannot be conveyed by GPA, test scores, and other background information
yet, the current NCSU application system does not provide for an accurate
review of the whole individual; and,
WHEREAS, a large emphasis for selection is placed on scores
generated from the SAT and ACT, which by themselves can be proven to
discriminate against race, ethnicity, sex, socioeconomic status, physical
impairment, and learning disabilities; furthermore, these standardized tests
have often shown unreliability, invalid measurements, a restrictive segment of
the test taker’s intellectual abilities, and is also used inappropriately (i.e.
tracking, labeling, placing, admitting); and,
WHEREAS, many other public institutes for higher education across
the nation, including several of NCSU’s peer institutions, are researching
innovative methods to improve their current admissions processes; and
WHEREAS, an admissions process that better allowed an applicant to
show his/her more promising features and relay a whole picture of his/her
abilities might draw a higher clientele of students applying for admission into
North Carolina State University; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that
the North Carolina State University Student Senate requests the creation of a
task force with the purposes of evaluating the current admissions process of the
university and making suggestions for improvement of the system; now, therefore
be it also
RESOLVED, that
the North Carolina State University Student Senate suggests that the admissions
reformation task force consist of NCSU Student Senate members appointed by the
Student Body President, Faculty Senate Members, members from the Office of
Admissions, and potentially be chaired by the Provost.
