RESOLUTION 05
A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
An act TO UrGE the north carolina general assembly to not increase the current tuition rates for the university of north carolina system
WHEREAS, the House budget proposed a five percent across the board tuition increase for the University of North Carolina System; and,
WHEREAS, neither the University of North Carolina Board of Governors nor governor Mike Easley recommended a tuition increase for the University of North Carolina System; and,
WHEREAS, over the past three years tuition has risen by an average of sixty two percent across the University of North Carolina System; and,
WHEREAS, the current economic downturn has caused thousands of North Carolina families to lose their jobs, straining especially the financial resources of those who have children in public institutions of higher education; and,
WHEREAS, financial aid programs across the state have been unable to adequately address the financial needs of families sending their children to institutions of higher learning in the face of rapidly rising tuition rates; and,
WHEREAS, budgetary shortfalls should not be rectified by targeting the already financially strained pockets of the students of the University of North Carolina System; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate Strongly urges the North Carolina General Assembly to not increase the tuition rates for the 16 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina system.
