A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED
An act TO COMMEMORATE DECEMBER 1, 2003
AS WORLD AIDS DAY
CAMPUSWIDE

WHEREAS, five people die each minute, every day,
from AIDS worldwide; and,
WHEREAS, by the end of 2002 it was estimated that there were 5.3
million people newly infected with HIV worldwide; and,
WHEREAS, there are approximately 42 million people living with HIV
and AIDS worldwide as of the end of 2002; and,
WHEREAS, an estimated 3 million deaths were from those living with
AIDS worldwide in 2002; and,
WHEREAS, in North Carolina last year, there were 1,014 newly
reported AIDS cases, a 16.4% increase since
2001; and,
WHEREAS, during the summer of 2003, using these statistics of
increases of HIV cases in North Carolina, health care experts stated that the
Triangle has had an outbreak of HIV cases since 2000; and,
WHEREAS, Over 50 students at 30 North Carolina
college campuses have tested positive for HIV since 2000; and,
WHEREAS, of those 50 students, at least 29 are from
Triangle-area colleges and universities; and,
WHEREAS, HIV and AIDS is an epidemic that can affect everyone,
regardless of race, creed, color, religion, gender, or sexual orientation; now,
therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate, in accordance with national and international organizations, supports the commemoration of World AIDS Day on December 1; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That from this day forward that the North Carolina State
University Student Senate request that each December 1 a moment of silence be
observed and on that day the Bell Tower shine red.
