WHEREAS, North Carolina State University presently
levies a $149.10 Student Center Operations Fee for the purpose of supporting
the activities of the Union and University Student Center; and,
WHEREAS, the Student Center Operations Fee presently supports the
ARTS NC State program, several student-focused programmatic offices, and the
maintenance and operations of the four student centers; and,
WHEREAS, at $149.10, the Operations Fee stands as the third largest
student fee, behind only the health fee and the academic Education and
Technology Fee; and,
WHEREAS, the existence of large fees supporting a diverse range of
activities makes it difficult for students to understand where their money is
going, thereby breeding distrust in the system; and,
WHEREAS, the separate Student Center Repair and Renovation fee,
presently at $26.95, has generally been met with greater student support and
understanding then the omnibus Operations Fee; and,
WHEREAS, the concept of separating the Operations Fee
into two or more separate fees has been discussed informally for several years,
and was supported by the Student Center Operating Fee Request Act of the 83rd
Session of the Student Senate; and,
WHEREAS, the differing activities presently funded by the Operations
Fee do not have a uniform level of student support; however, the present fee
structure only allows students to express support in terms of the bundled
student center operations package; and,
WHEREAS, fee separation will promote transparency and accountability
while providing opportunities for further enrichment of ARTS NC State and
Student Center programming; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that
the North Carolina State University Student Senate urges the University to take
prompt action to separate the Student Center Operations Fee into separate fees
for Arts, Operations, and Maintenance.
