Committee______________________
WHEREAS, On Thursday October 21, 2004 the Undergraduate
Academics Officers Council voted in unanimous support of recommendations to
change the suspension policy for first year Undergraduate students; and,
WHEREAS, This recommendation calls for following
policy:
Students who have received final grades for at least 12 credit hours at
NC State University and have earned a cumulative GPA of less than 1.0 will be
suspended immediately at the end of the current semester of enrollment (Fall or
Spring); and,
WHEREAS, The goals of this change are fourfold:
1.
Set higher academic standards for this
institution
2.
Improve behavior to make it less likely that
a student will be in academic trouble
3.
Reduce the likelihood of a student turning a
problem into a bigger problem
4.
Allow the University to enroll additional new
students during the Spring Semester, and;
WHEREAS, Research of freshman performance entering the
University from 1999 through 2003 reveals that of 682 freshman who earned below
a 1.0 GPA their first semester: 89.3%
failed to bring their GPA up to a 1.8 (the level needed to continue enrollment)
by the end of their second semester and of the 190 transfer students who earned
less than 1.0 GPA their first semester, 87% failed to bring their GPA up to 1.8
by the end of second semester, and;
WHEREAS, Comparison of like institutions shows that NC
State’s current suspension policy is overly lenient, and this is detrimental to
reputation of the University and ultimately devalues each and every degree that
the University issues, and;
WHEREAS, the current policy allows a student to accumulate low
quality Grade Points and can ruin the student’s chances for eventual academic
success, and this policy is unfair to quality students who are attempting to
gain admission, and ultimately deprives the University of an outstanding
academic culture and now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that
the North Carolina State University Student Senate hereby supports the
recommendation of the UAOC and that this resolution shall be forwarded to the
Provost.
