AN ACT TO APPLAUD THE
ADMINISTRATION’S EFFORTS TO ACCOMMODATE AND SUPPORT STUDENTS DISPLACED BY
HURRICANE KATRINA

WHEREAS, on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, made landfall on the southern coast of the United States of America, resulting in incomprehensible destruction in states including Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, as well as causing considerable destruction in the state of Florida, a state that is still recovering from numerous previous losses due to natural disasters; and,
WHEREAS, the City of New Orleans and surrounding areas where many fellow colleges and universities are located was in one of the hardest areas hit, suffering damages that has rendered the city inoperable for months according to city officials, and with recovery estimated to take over a year; and,
WHEREAS, upon assessing the need stemming from this tragedy, the North Carolina State University was among one of the first universities to open their doors to students displaced by this disaster to continue to provide quality educations and accommodations to those who have already suffered so much in this disasters wake; and,
WHEREAS, the Student Senate, on behalf the students of North Carolina State University takes great pride in our University for their actions to meet the needs of these students, helping them to secure their futures, when their current lives are in much distress; so, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the NCSU Student Senate applauds the efforts that the administration at North Carolina State University has made and continues to, to provide services to our fellow students who after this historic tragedy can no longer continue their studies at their home institutions; and let it also be
RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be sent to all administrative units and university officials, who are devoted to seeing that the new students and guests we welcome to our wolfpack family due to this disaster are well taken care of, providing support as they continue their lives away from home, both on-campus and through distance education services.
