A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT REQUESTING THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO GIVE UNIVERSITY HOUSING THE AUTHORITY OVER THE VISITATION POLICY
Summary of Purpose:
Urging the Inter Residence Council to present a case for the Board of Trustees to review and consider, regarding the visitation policy. The Senate sends the suggestions of extending visitation hours for Sunday through Thursday to 2 a.m., as well as making visitation hours for Friday and Saturday 24-hours, and to have a roommate agreement include an option to reduce any visitation hours, as well as any specific needs or concerns regarding visitation, with the allowance of editing through the course of the year.

A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED

An act Requesting the Board of Trustees to give university housing the authority over the visitation policy

WHEREAS, the current visitation policy of North Carolina State University Housing that students living in an on-campus residence hall may not have members of the opposite gender on their floor or room from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights and from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights; and,

 

WHEREAS,  it is also the current visitation policy of North Carolina State University Housing that students living in an on-campus residence hall may not have members of the same-gender from outside of the residence hall present in their residence hall without registration during these same hours; and,

   

WHEREAS, many North Carolina State University students strongly appose the current visitation policy; and,

 

WHEREAS,  many North Carolina State University students would like to see an extension in visitation hours; and,

 

WHEREAS, many institutions across the country provide extended visitation hours compared to our current policy, such as the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Western Carolina University, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Appalachian State University, University of Georgia, University of Florida, University of Arkansas, Purdue University, University of Iowa, and many others; and,

 

WHEREAS, the safety and privacy of students in residence halls is highly important, as well as entrusting students to practice mature behavior; and,

 

WHEREAS, visitation is a policy that comes under the Board of Trustees jurisdiction; and,

 

WHEREAS, no University Housing policy are required to go before the Board of Trustees, but the hours of visitation; and,

 

WHEREAS,  the Inter Residence Council has also expressed interest in moving to a longer or 24 hour visitation policy and that Housing should decide the policy; and, therefore be it

 

RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate urges the Inter Residence Council with Student Government to present a case for the Board of Trustees to review and consider that the authority over the visitation should be given to University Housing; and,

 

RESOLVED, University Housing should take the North Carolina State University Student Senate’s suggestions of extending visitation hours for Sunday through Thursday to 2 a.m., as well as making visitation hours for Friday and Saturday 24-hours; and,

 

RESOLVED, the University Housing should take the North Carolina State University Student Senate’s suggestion to have a roommate agreement include an option to reduce any visitation hours, as well as any specific needs or concerns regarding visitation, with the allowance of editing through the course of the year.
