An act TO
SUPPORT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A

WHEREAS, GBLT students are 3 times as likely to attempt or commit suicide as non-GBLT students; and,
WHEREAS, GBLT students consistently report far greater fear of physical violence than their peers and a greater level of in-class stereotyping or harassment; and,
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS, Everyone should be free to learn in an environment where they feel comfortable; and,
WHEREAS, the presence of an GBLT center can greatly improve the educational and social
experiences of GBLT students, provide a supportive network that could reduce the risk of suicide in the GBLT community, and create an environment where GBLT students and other students can congregate safely; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, by the North Carolina State University Student Senate that we strongly encourage the University Office of Diversity to establish and fund a permanent center on campus to serve Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, Transgender and Allied Students of the University community as well those questioning their sexual identity, with
(a) sufficient space to host programs, and while being mindful of already limited student space in the student center;
(b) sufficient staff to handle the needs of the campus GBLT community and their allies. The staff should include, but not be limited to, a director, secretary, and part-time grad student. And with the purposes of,
(c) providing a safe-haven for GBLT students and their other students and;
(d) serving as an educational, vocational, and network building resource center, and;
(e) educating the entire University community on GBLT issues and improving the campus climate, and;
class=Section3>(f) acting as a representative, advocate, and activist for the GBLT community.
