WHEREAS,   North Carolina State University currently requires all students to complete 53 hours of courses as part of the University's General Education Requirements; and,

WHEREAS,   a University task force was appointed to review these General Education Requirements and formulate a proposal for their revision; and,

WHEREAS,   the task force has furnished its recommendations to the Student Senate for review prior to submitting the proposal to the Chancellor for final approval; and,

WHEREAS,   based upon the information it has received, particularly with respect to the proposed First Year Course, the Student Senate encourages the Task Force to ensure the material taught does not duplicate the current curricula of other courses within the respective Colleges of the University; and,

WHEREAS,   beyond this particular concern, the Student Senate supports the recommendations presented for providing greater academic freedom to students by reducing the number of hours required to satisfy General Education Requirements; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED,  that the North Carolina State University Student Senate formally endorses the proposed revisions to the General Education Requirements; and be it further,

RESOLVED,  that, if these recommendations are approved, the University cautiously proceed with its implementation to avoid duplicating material already taught in various courses of the respective Colleges.
