An act TO STANDARDIZE THE TIMING OF REFERENDA AMENDING THE STUDENT
BODY CONSTITUTION

WHEREAS, current statutes allow referenda to be placed on a ballot before the Student Body at any time; and,
WHEREAS, historically, nearly all referenda have always been placed on the Spring General Election ballot; and,
WHEREAS, referenda that have been presented at non-traditional times have frequently been poorly understood within the University community, subject to little public discourse, and routinely subject to defeat; now, therefore be it
ENACTED, by the
Section 1. Statutory Authority. This bill is adopted pursuant to the provisions of Article II, Section 5(d) and 5(e) of the Student Body Constitution, and Chapter 2, Rule 17(b)(3) of the Student Body Statutes.
Section 2. Student Body Statutes §7-5.3 (“Occurrence”) shall be amended by striking as follows:
§7-5.3. Occurrence.
Pending referenda shall be presented to the Student Body in the Spring General Election unless an act of Senate provides for an earlier special election by 2/3 majority vote.
Section 3. This act shall be effective upon its enrollment.
