WHEREAS,   members of the Department of Student Affairs have written a university policy on “regulations for student leadership and participation in student organizations”; and,

WHEREAS,   these regulations have the potential to damage the ability of all qualified students to serve in leadership positions at North Carolina State University; and,

WHEREAS,   N.C. State is focused on personal growth and learning, and all students should have equal access to leadership opportunities and the advancement of personal growth; and,

WHEREAS,   since the conception of this regulation there has been extensive debate and numerous changes suggested to accommodate differing opinions; and,

WHEREAS,   many students and staff members still have grave concerns about the Student Leaders Regulation in its current form; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State Student Senate opposes the Student Leaders and Organization Regulation as it is currently written; and be it further

RESOLVED,  that the Student Senate believes the 2.5 GPA requirement currently included in this regulation will unduly exclude students who are otherwise qualified to lead based on their standing in the University; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the regulation's recovery strategy should not include suspension from office, so as not to hinder a student’s personal leadership development and enrichment opportunities; and be it further

RESOLVED, that there should be no restrictions of what positions and leadership opportunities part-time students can participate in; and be it further

RESOLVED, while it is important to address disciplinary sanctions, it is equally important to provide a recovery strategy or an approval process so students are given an opportunity to atone for past mistakes; and be it further

RESOLVED, accordingly, students should be given the opportunity to appeal any decision of the office of Student Conduct to a five (5) member special University committee composed of the Provost or his/ her designee, the Dean of the petitioner; and be it further

RESOLVED,  that the Student Senate calls upon Chancellor James Oblinger to create a Task Force concerning the Student Leaders and Organization Regulation to address these concerns in a more official manner, providing for formal and extensive input from faculty, staff and students.

SECTION 2, if this Resolution passes by a two-thirds majority of the Senate, it shall be considered an automatic override of any veto by the Student Body President
