RESOLUTION 09

 

A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED

An act To keep Student government unified as one

 

Short Title: The United Student Government Act    (Public)

Sponsored by: SENATORS Hankins and Mickey; TREAURER Compton

WHEREAS, the United Graduate Student Association, UGSA, has been a vital part of North Carolina State University Student Government for over fifty years; and,

 

WHEREAS, many effective advocates for student issues, including Senators and Student Body Presidents, have been graduate students; and,

 

WHEREAS, the UGSA in their meeting on April 24, 2006 passed a resolution to call for the separation of Student Government and the United Graduate School Association; and,

 

WHEREAS, concerns have not been expressed by the UGSA to the new officers of Student Government; and,

 

WHEREAS, every year Graduate groups apply and receive funding from the Student Government Appropriations Process; and,

 

WHEREAS, many groups receiving appropriations count both graduate and undergraduate students amongst their members; and,

 

WHEREAS, the projects and initiatives that are funded by Student Government often affect both graduate and undergraduate students; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Graduate School is represented with the ability to run for higher office or the same proportional number of seats as all other colleges; and,

 

WHEREAS, concerns common to all students far outweigh concerns unique to undergraduates or graduate students; and,

 

WHEREAS, many issues are inherently inseparable, requiring one policy for all students; such policies are best addressed by a single proportional body; and,

 

WHEREAS, only a united Student Government can bring about positive change for the Students of North Carolina State University; now, therefore be it

           

RESOLVED,  that the North Carolina State University Student Senate disagrees with any form of separation of undergraduate and graduate governing bodies; now, be it further

 

RESOLVED,  that the North Carolina State University Student Senate calls upon Student Body President Will Quick to form a Select Commission comprised of Senators, Student Government Officers, and USGA Officials to identify underlying concerns of the USGA and to recommend ways for improvement.
