WHEREAS,  voting remains an integral part of any democratic society; and,

WHEREAS,  trust in the system in which votes are cast has a direct relationship to the trust in the officials and the institution to which such officials were elected; and,

WHEREAS,  during the 2007 Spring General Elections a parsing error was discovered in the tabulation software for write-in votes, causing a delay in the processing and subsequent release of voting results; and,

WHEREAS,  Erich Fabricius, author of many of the web technologies that Student Government uses today to carry out many of its duties, including the voting software, promptly and successfully corrected the error in the tabulation software, allowing the final results to be tabulated and released; and,

WHEREAS,  Fabricius also offered to harden the underlying voting software and was allowed to do so in time for the 2007 Fall General Election; and,

WHEREAS,  in addition to enhanced security, the revised voting software included a number of functionality improvements that substantially expedited the tabulation process, including real-time automatic LDAP queries, predictive write-in mapping, and a refined interface; and,

WHEREAS,  Fabricius has neither asked for nor accepted any payment for the above-mentioned services and improvements; now therefore be it,

RESOLVED, that the N.C. State University Student Senate, on behalf of the Student Government and the Student Body extends its appreciation to Erich Fabricius for his pro bono services.
