An act TO Encourage NC State’s Information Technology department to increase space in students’ unity accounts and to outsource university email services to Provide more efficient services

WHEREAS,
students
currently have a maximum of two hundred
megabytes (MB) of “AFS”
space available to them for web space and
for use as an “extra drive” ;and,
WHEREAS, students have one hundred ninety four MB of space maximum for use on
“roaming profiles”, for use on computers in Unity and college based labs; and,
WHEREAS, students have a maximum of one hundred forty-four MB of space to use for
email space available; and,
WHEREAS, this space cannot exceed three hundred fifty MB aggregate; and,
WHEREAS, additional space
can be purchased for a minimum charge of $21.80 for the first
year, and a minimum charge of $11.80 every year afterwards; and,
WHEREAS, for many students, the default amount of storage is plenty of space, but for others it is lacking, presenting the need for additional storage to be procured; and,
WHEREAS, given the lowering
costs of storage of the recent decade, adding additional space
has become cheaper every year; and,
WHEREAS, NC State
Information Technology Division has looked at a multitude of options to
increase space, including time-based storage, which moves data to slower and cheaper options as data in personal space ages, saving money and increasing storage; and,
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina Student Senate encourages NC State’s Information Technology Division to find ways, including tiered storage, to increase the amount of space available to students, faculty and staff.
