A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITILED AN ACT TO COMMEMORATE RIDDICK STADIUM AS A SITE OF HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE

WHEREAS,   Riddick Stadium, built in 1907, served as the home of Wolfpack football for nearly 60 years until the completion of Carter-Finley Stadium; and,

 

WHEREAS,   Riddick Stadium was named for Wallace Carl Riddick who served NC State as football coach, beloved math and engineering professor, 4th President of the University and 1st Dean of the School of Engineering (now College of Engineering); and,

 

WHEREAS,  The concrete bleachers at Riddick Stadium were built as a Reconstruction Finance Corporation (Public Works Administration) project during the Great Depression; and,

 

WHEREAS,   The concrete bleachers and the field house of Riddick Stadium were landmarks on the NC State campus for the better part of a century, serving as office space and a residence hall among other functions; and,

 

WHEREAS,   The NC State Football teams that played in Riddick Stadium captured ACC Championships in 1957, 1963, 1964, and 1965; and,

 

WHEREAS,   The only remnant of this NC State landmark is the Field House because of a new utility plant and classroom expansions; and,

 

WHEREAS,   This Field House is slated for demolition in order to provide space for further construction; and,

 

WHEREAS,   Nothing has been offered to commemorate this historical NC State landmark; now therefore be it,

 

RESOLVED,  that the North Carolina State Student Senate supports the creation of a memorial to commemorate Riddick Stadium; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED,  That the Student Body President appoint no less than two (2) undergraduate students to the University Graduate Student Association (UGSA) Riddick Stadium Memorial Ad Hoc Committee, which will explore a feasible memorial for Riddick Stadium and send forth its recommendation to the University.
