A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
an act to Shorten time students are affected by campaigning
Short Title:
Student Campaign Harassment Reduction Act (Public)

WHEREAS, Students genuinely become tired of campaign by the day of elections; and,
WHEREAS, there is no limit on the amount of time a person can spend
campaigning in advance;
and,
WHEREAS, books being open so long raise cause for a person to make an uninformed decision about running for office; now, therefore, be it,
ENACTED, by the
Section 1. Student Body Statutes Chapter 7 ("Elections") shall be amended as follows:
§7-1.3. Spring General Election
Timeline.
(a)
Books open: At least 12 7 class days prior to the
All Candidates Meeting.
(d) General Elections: First
class Monday and Tuesday ten (10) regularly scheduled class days after
Spring Break.
(e) Run-Off Elections: Monday
and Tuesday one week after the General Elections.
§7-1.5. Fall General Election
Timeline.
(a) Books open: At least 10
days prior to the All Candidates Meeting.
(b) Books close: 1 day prior
to the All Candidates Meeting.
(c) All Candidates Meeting:
Third Class Wednesday of the Fall Semester.
(d) General Elections: Second Monday and Tuesday following the
All-Candidates Meeting.
(e) Run-Off Elections: Monday
and Tuesday one week after the General Elections.
§7-1.21. Filing Timelines.
(b)
In the case of the Fall General Election, the Board of Elections shall
begin accepting filings for office no later than ten (10) five (5)
class days prior to the All Candidates Meeting, and stop accepting filings one
(1) day prior to All Candidates Meeting, at 5:00 PM.
§7-1.28. Electronic Polling.
There shall be electronic polling
accessible through the Student Government webpage, which shall open no later
than 8:00 AM the first day of elections and shall remain open continuously until
the end of the second day of elections for twenty-four (24) hours.
§7-4.18. Official
Campaign Start
Upon filing for office, candidates
and their campaign workers may inform students, on a personal basis, about the
candidate’s platform, including information relating to their website. No
candidate, campaign, nor any campaign worker, shall host mass events, presentation
at
student organizations, and display any form of publicity campaign which may
include but not limited to Facebook fliers, handout materials on campus,
creation of a facebook group, sandwich boards, chalking, painting the tunnel, or
mass flyering materials to further the
interests of said candidacy prior to midnight (12:00 pm) the day the books close.
Section 2. This act shall be effective upon its enrollment.
