Referred to: Fast-tracked
WHEREAS, students are allotted three hundred and fifty MB of file space, for use divided
between their AFS, email, and Unity allocations; and,
WHEREAS, the Student Senate recognizes that this amount of space is insufficient for some
students, and supports expansion of this space in a cost-effective manor, as
elaborated in the Information Technology Renewal Act; and,
WHEREAS, purchasing additional space from the Office of Information Technology (OIT) at
current rates is cost prohibitive for most students, increasing the time wasted
tending file spaces, creating an excessive need for compressing files, as well as
increasing the reliance on private file hosting; and,
WHEREAS, insufficient space available on campus networks threatens to stifle innovation
inside and outside the classroom, limiting the types of communication on campus
networks to files that can be exchanged through external means or special class-based arrangements such as through WebCT Vista; and,
WHEREAS, the current file space allotments are not designed to accommodate use of newer
technologies, such as digital video, which is expected to grow in use with digital
video cameras available for loan at the Library, increased support for student
video production via WolfTV, and increased use of multimedia in technology equipped classrooms; and,
WHEREAS, the file space allotted for student use is utilized extensively for academic
communication and the exchange files for group projects, among other uses; and,
WHEREAS, the Education Technology Fee (ETF) is a fee used to advance the quality of
learning experiences and outcomes for students beyond what appropriated
funding allows, as well as provide for connectivity infrastructure and services to
support student learning; and,
WHEREAS, addition of student file space though use of a portion of the recently approved $17
per student increase to the ETF will meet these objectives; now, therefore be it;
RESOLVED, the Student Senate strongly supports utilization of the ETF to provide for
increased student file space via funds available for appropriation for the 2008-09
academic year; and,
RESOLVED, file space limitations should be continuously re-evaluated to facilitate and
encourage the utilization of new technologies, and to provide for rich and cutting edge learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
