A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT SUPPORTING STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND REINSTATING LATE-NIGHT USE OF TALLEY STUDENT CENTER

 

Short Title: Student Organization Support Act                                                                    (Public)

WHEREAS,  one of the largest fundraiser sources for the National Pan-Hellenic Council and other organizations is the hosting of Talley Parties; and,

 

WHEREAS,  the funds raised from these events are used to host programs beneficial to the entire N.C. State community, service and other philanthropy activities, and offset the costs of the organizations to its members; and,

 

WHEREAS,  in addition, the events offer a safe, nonalcoholic source of entertainment for N.C. State students and members of the greater Raleigh community; and,

 

WHEREAS,  in recent years, security has been increased to ensure the safety of everyone at these events; and,

 

WHEREAS,  on September 30, 2006 at around 2:00am a man slashed another individual with a knife at a late night Talley event, and on-site police were able to conduct a investigation resulting in his arrest; and,

 

WHEREAS,  following the event, a moratorium was placed on all late night Talley events; and,

 

WHEREAS,  according to a Technician article entitled ÒTalley Stabbing puts hold on late-night partiesÓ by Chris Sanchez, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Evelyn Reiman stated in a memo calling for the halt of all Talley parties for Òfall 2006 and until further noticeÓ; and,

 

WHEREAS,  in the same article Don Patty stated each person entering a party will receive a pat-down as well as have their ID digitally scanned and receive a color-coded bracelet; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Deb Luckadoo, director of Talley student center activities, has been appointed as chair of the Late Night Talley Party committee; and,

 

WHEREAS,  currently students pay a Student Centers fee of $192.70 to support the operations, activities, and programs offered by the University Student Center as well as use of the Student Center; and,

 

WHEREAS,  calls from the Greek community, the student newspaper and a number of student leaders have been made petitioning the return of this N.C. State tradition in an expeditious manner; now, therefore, be it

 

RESOLVED, by the North Carolina State University Student Senate that the Student Government calls for the Late Night Talley Party committee to meet as soon as feasible; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED, the Student Government further asks the committee to adopt measures that ensure the safety of all persons in attendance at such parties; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED, the Student Governments requests the committee ensure that the N.C. State community can continue the tradition of Talley Parties by working to having the moratorium lifted by the end of the Fall 2007 semester or sooner.
