Long Title:
A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTILED AN ACT TO MAKE PUBLIC SERVICE A MANDATORY ASPECT OF BEING A STUDENT SENATOR
Summary of Purpose:
This resolution will require that student senators complete at least 15 hours of community service per semester and report these hours to the campus community committee before the last meeting of the semester. The committee will then publish the hours report to the Senate President, Technician and any other applicable student information outlets.

WHEREAS, NC State Student Senators are elected as leaders of our campus community; and,

 

WHEREAS, as leaders and role models, we are compelled to serve our community; and,

 

WHEREAS,  there are countless opportunities to serve while a Student at NC State; and,

 

WHEREAS,  the Student Senate should be committed to directly involve itself in the campus community; and,

 

WHEREAS,  countless leaders that have come before us have pushed to make the Senate more like an effective student organization and less like an actionless bureaucracy; and,

 

WHEREAS,  having an increased presence in our University Community will give students a greater awareness and appreciation for Student Government; and,

 

WHEREAS,  the Senate should have clear expectations for every one of its members; and,

 

WHEREAS,  those expectations should include a commitment to service-leadership; and,

 

WHEREAS,  these expectations should be a reasonable reflection of what students are capable of taking on during the academic year; and,

 

WHEREAS,  by definition, community service is any action or service that is performed for the benefit of the public or its institutions; and,

 

WHEREAS,  many student leaders attain over 40 hours of community service in a semester; and,

 

WHEREAS,  completing at least fifteen (15) hours of community service per semester is a reasonable, attainable goal for Student Senators; now therefore be it,

 

RESOLVED,  NC State Student Senators will hereby be encouragedrequired to complete fifteen (15) hours of community service per spring and fall semester ; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED,  that Senators will report their hours in writing or email the first fifteen (15) hours they serve toserved to the Campus Community committee  by the second-to-last meeting of an academic semester; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED,  that the Campus Community Committee will announce service opportunities to the senate as part of its weekly committee report

 

RESOLVED,  that the Campus Community Committee is charged with reminding Senators of the impending due date and determining the format forof service hour reporting; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED,  that the Campus Community committee will then release the community service report to the Student Senate,  Senate President, Technician,  and other applicable student information outlets so that all senators will be held accountable for being servant-leaders at NC State University.
