RESOLUTION 42

 

A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT TO HONOR THE LIFE OF NC STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL COACH KAY YOW

 

Short Title: Kay Yow Appreciation Act                                                                              (Public)

WHEREAS, Sandra Kay Yow was born on March 14, 1942; and

 

WHEREAS,  Yow received her Bachelor of Science degree in English from East Carolina University in 1964; and,

 

WHEREAS,  In 1970 Yow accepted the head coaching job at Elon University; and,

 

WHEREAS, In 1975 Yow became the head coach at NC State University where she gave 34 wonderful years of service as head coach for the Wolfpack as head women’s basketball coach; and,

 

WHEREAS,  On January 24, 2009, Kay Yow died after a courageous battle with cancer; and,

 

WHEREAS, NC State Chancellor James Oblinger said Yow was "a great person, coach, leader and friend" and that her “courage, passion for her work, strength and humility despite her personal challenges inspired all of us. She epitomized what a coach and role model should be.  Her influence will be felt for years to come.  The Wolfpack Nation and everyone who followed her successes on the court and her struggles off the court were blessed by Kay Yow’s life.  She will be profoundly missed."; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Yow’s life is a testament to us all on dealing with hardship, persevering through trial, and following the example of Jimmy Vavano to “don't give up, don't ever give up”; now therefore be it,

 

RESOLVED, that the NC State Student Senate on behalf of the NC State Student Government and the Student Body celebrate the life and legacy of Kay Yow; and, be it further,

 

RESOLVED, that we are continually inspired by her life, values, and her love; and, be it further,

 

RESOLVED, upon adoption and subsequent enrollment of this resolution, this bill shall be

presented to the Yow family with this clause struck.
