Quote:
"Having a dream is what keeps you alive. Overcoming the challenges makes life worth living."
Key Issues:
Fiscal Responsibility and Accountability
-It is important for the Student Government's budget to remain balanced, and to allow as much money as possible to go towards appropriations (money from your student government fee that is given to student groups who apply). Managing this appropriations process is very important and is a priority of mine.
Tuition and Fees
-Keeping tuition and fees as low as possible through the current budget crisis. It is important that we focus on keeping the quality of our education high, but not at a cost that would keep students from attending the university. Some larger campus organizations should also look at options of becoming more self sustaining. This too would help balance our budget and could help promote the creation of smaller and more diverse groups.
Parking and Transportation
-The Department of Transportation should instate carpool parking passes for commuters with an option of premium parking spaces. The Department of Transportation should not sell more parking permits than they have spaces for. Doing this allows them to write more tickets because students have no where to park. Also before adding any new buildings on campus there should be a proportionate number of parking spaces to reflect progress.
Making the Student Voice Heard
-All too often students do not know that students DO have a voice in what the university does. I am always available to listen to students concerns and find a path or resolution.
Continuing and Improving the Excellence of the NCSU Student Senate
-The Senate has the student body's best interests at heart. Continuing to keep this motive and objective is very important. I am a supporter of an amendment in the Student Senate to split the Speaker Pro Tempore and Appropriations position. I further support an amendment that Lifelong Education senate seats be available for part-time students.
University Housing
-Students have requested a more detailed questionnaire for student housing. Also University Housing has improved over the years but we should strive for constant improvement and upgrades. It is my position that students should have a voice in the overall improvement quality of housing both on and off campus. I further advocate that University Housing is far outdated and needs dramatic upgrades.
Non-Degree Students
-It is important to improve the process for NDS. Many of our students seek transfers to and from NCSU for academic credit to return to their host college/university. Non-Degree Students have the most challenging task of lack in advising and alignment with automated degree audit. Non-Degree students are NOT exempt from student fees and should be afforded the same benefits as regular students.
Veterans
-As a former Army veteran it is important to recognize all veterans. I will make it my personal goal to ensure that military education credit someday will be recognized by NC State.
Student Campaign Reform
-During an election you will see signs all over the campus or in some cases you will receive emails galore. My guarantee to you is that I will promote a green campaign with no SPAM or a litter of signs. My duties should and will be meeting all of you in person. Most of all making sure that I am effectively doing my job to serve you. If I am doing my job then you should never see a campaign sign.
Our Community and Outreach
-Not all NC State students are here for 4 years. Most are here for a few classes in the summer or in transit to meet credit requirements elsewhere. On the other hand some students come to NC State to see if this is an academic fit. Our community is the greater Raleigh area and all its schools, colleges and universities and we must do more to promote NC State services to the general public and local schools.
Diversity
-I will admit that I am not perfect. However I am sociologically mindful. Diversity is not just a word but an action. We as an entire community must do more to educate others. I am a huge advocate of first amendment rights. The Freedom Expression Tunnel is years of free speech and expression. Sometimes even I don’t understand everything in the tunnel. It has had its problems with poor judgment of expression and thankfully the student community joined together to educate others freely and stamp out symbols of another era. We all may have varied ideologies, religious beliefs and orientations. My door is open to all citizens and students and you will have a voice.
Talley Expansion
-As a student senator it is my duty to first listen to my fellow constituents. But most of all rationally take a position that best reflects the students I represent. Therefore I cannot endorse the Rally 4 Talley Campaign. I am very aware that our university needs upgrades but the greatest population with the least amount of income should not bear the burden of responsibility, especially those students that live in fixed incomes. My position is that we should do more to embrace our community connected and around NC State by perhaps providing off-campus meal plans to various establishments. Many other university communities have thriving and competitive businesses long after the dining halls and on-campus food vendors have closed. We should help create a culture to support those businesses and look into better technology that will build our diverse campus towards private businesses that value students just the same as a building that eventually turns into staff offices over time. I appreciate all the hard work that has gone into the Rally 4 Talley campaign. However the students I have personally spoken with have stated other important issues and our economy outweigh the need for expansion at this time.
Mandatory Health Coverage
-I am in complete support of having health coverage for every American citizen. But to mandate coverage without mandating the very industry that ultimately surprises consumers with escape clauses, rapid rate changes, hidden fees, restrictions, procedure costs and outrageous prescription costs I cannot support the UNC Board of Governors decision to override our elected state officials to sneak this requirement starting the 2010 academic year without even having a firm plan on how much coverage will cost, what it will entail or even the restrictions. I will advocate ridding of mandatory health coverage until our nation has an equal plan that again is not a cost burden on students.
Fast Track Elimination
-We all want representation that is equal but fair for all. Sometimes that means that something that is a great idea even has to slow down so we don’t miss anything. Fast Track is something that just equally hurts as well as it helps. Either eliminate Fast Track or restrict its usage from anything that utilizes student fees. By doing so will make student government more fiscally responsible and accountable.
