A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR THE ADJOURNMENT SINE DIE OF THE NINETIETH SESSION OF THE NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT GOVERNMENT

WHEREAS, We appropriated $85,138 of student funds in the Fall of 2010 between 171 student groups and $75,796 of student funds in the Spring of 2011 between 157 student groups to benefit and assists their own purposes and causes; and,

 

WHEREAS, We funded student activities such as Ludacris, Silent Disco, Homecoming, and Leadershape; and,

 

WHEREAS, Student Government helped keep student traditions by helping fund The Brick; and,

 

WHEREAS,  The 90th session of the Student Senate successfully organized the largest campout in the history of the University for the N.C. State v UNC Men’s basketball game and raised $1,125 for The V. Foundation; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Student Government created and funded the “Top 54 Deck of Cards” that was handed out to all incoming freshman; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We helped establish Zipcars around campus for student transportation; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Our organization advocated across campus for many different diversity events; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We included more students in the game day experience by increasing student seating; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Student Government helped in recognizing Kay Yow for her outstanding contributions and dedications to this university; and,

 

 

WHEREAS,  Student leaders facilitated communication between students and administration about the budget cuts; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We worked with administrators to improve the strategic plan on advising; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We raised money for the Ronald McDonald house by collecting pop tabs in the form of a competition between the dorms; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Representatives from Student Government participated in Shack-A-Thon to raise $1534.74 for Habitat for Humanity; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Student Government helped out with the record breaking blood drive during Wolfpack welcome week; and,

 

WHEREAS, Student Government created and executed the Distinguished Professor Lecture Series, honoring three “student favorite” professors each year and gives them the chance to speak about any topic they wish; and,

 

WHEREAS, Student Government participated in Diversity week in the form of “Howl for Diversity”; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Student Government created The College Cup, unifying our University through a competition between the colleges; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We initiated the Chancellor’s Ice Cream Dream event, which was attended by over 1,000 students; and,

 

WHEREAS, Student Government was present in the Brickyard Booth every Wednesday from 10:15AM-1:30PM; and,

 

WHEREAS, The Student Body President communicated with the student body via Blog; and,

 

WHEREAS, Student Government initiated the Student Success Forum; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Student Government formed Student Centered Moodle Pages for CALS and Engineering; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Sustainability Workshop Groups and a Strategic Planning Sustainability Town Hall were implemented; and,

 

WHEREAS,  A Tuition and Fee Forum was held to assess students’ opinions; and,

 

WHEREAS,  Wolfpack Student Discounts were implemented; and,

 

WHEREAS, We lobbied NC legislators to make cuts proportionally between K-12, community colleges, and universities (rather than singling out Universities), stressing the importance of NC State University to NC economy; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We met with legislators in Washington to discuss the importance of Pell Grants; and,

 

WHEREAS, We worked on committees that were identifying where cuts would be taken, sought student feedback, researched and presented alternative options; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We developed communication strategy with College Deans regarding budget issues and asked that Deans reach out to their students; and, 

 

WHEREAS,  We asked that upper administration consistently keep students updated and seek feedback; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We advocated on behalf of students at all University Standing Committees, Athletic Director Search committee, Provost search committee, Strategic Planning (including the Undergraduate Student Success Task Force), Trustee Meetings, and the Tuition and Fee Committees; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We asked that online systems be centralized: Wolfware

 will become the standard for online courses; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We worked with Provost Arden to make sure Dead Weeks are actually “dead”; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We worked with Athletics to address the plethora of ticketing issues; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We identified academic advising issues: Found that the majority of students are satisfied with advising, except in CHASS (CHASS created an Academic Support Initiative as a result); and,

 

WHEREAS,  We urged Administration to eliminate extraneous DELTA fees for students; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We worked with transportation to create “10 things you need to know about transportation”; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We asked administrators to provide constant updates to students online and begin video messaging; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We expedited new Centennial Campus Dining options; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We distributed free blue books and pencils to students during exams; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We provided and facilitated free transportation for students attending home Football and Men's Basketball games (Red Terror Transit), as well as to NC State’s Bowl Game in Florida; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We hosted Nightwalk; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We secured an extra 1,000 student seats per football game (valued at $250,000) to help accommodate record student demand; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We handled Physical distribution of extra tickets to students; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We responded to make in-season change to guest ticket policy in order to allow all students to receive tickets before guest tickets could be requested, increasing the number of seats going to students; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We created committee and redesigned student ticketing policy to begin fall 2011. New policy improves efficiencies and corrects flaws from previous policies while responding to student demand to add other features to policy; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We worked with NC State Athletics to move entire student section into the lower bowl -- closer to the field to make Carter-Finley even more loud and give us a better home field advantage; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We designed and implemented promotion for the nationally televised Thursday night game against Florida State. Red and white checkerboard pattern of SG designed t-shirts distributed to entire 9,000 student seats; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We provided more access to student parking gates at RBC to decrease wait time on Trinity road; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We created the Dominos Student Appreciation Nights promotion to reward students who attend non-revenue sporting events. Free pizza was given to students at men's and women's soccer games, volleyball games, women's basketball games, gymnastic meets, and softball games; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We created and implemented the first SG Meet the Pack Student Autograph Session with the Men's and Women's Basketball teams in Reynolds; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We worked with athletics and RBC Center staff to open more lines for students to enter the RBC Center faster and more efficiently; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We coordinated and designed "Block S" t-shirt promotion during the home UNC men's basketball game; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We created the SG Student Attendance Raffle for softball and baseball games; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We participated in Fall Color Explosion/ Breast Cancer Awareness Vigil- NC State students, faculty and staff worked with NC State Grounds Crew to plant flowers around campus in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month; and,  

 

WHEREAS,  Through Howlin’ for Hunger Food Drive, 1102 lbs of food were collected at the NC State vs. Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball game; and,

 

WHEREAS,  In the Operation Christmas Child project, we worked with College of Management and CSLEPS to make Christmas possible for the youth of Haven House; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We participated in the co-leading Origami Wishes with CSLEPS; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We participated in Relay for Life, and currently have raised $450.00; and,

 

WHEREAS,  We participated in Service NC State by packaging over 400,000 meals; therefore be it,

RESOLVED,  by the North Carolina State University Student Senate that:

Section 1.        Any portions of the journal yet unapproved shall stand approved, effective noon, April 19, 2011. The Secretary shall provide an opportunity for online review and correction by all Senators, as provided for by Senate Rule.

 

 

Section 2.        Pursuant to Senate Rule 4, the 90th Session of the North Carolina State University Student Senate shall stand adjourned sine die, effective at five o’clock PM on Tuesday, the nineteenth of April, two thousand and eleven.

 

Section 3.        In the event of vetoes or crises, the Senate President shall be empowered to suspend sine die adjournment for a period up to one week for purposes of reconvening the Senate.

 

Section 4.        In all cases where this act and the Standing Rules of the Senate may conflict, this act shall govern.

 

Section 5.        This act is effective upon its adoption.
