A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO SHOW STUDENT GOVERNMENTÕS APPRECIATION FOR FARMERS

WHEREAS, North CarolinaÕs agricultural industry, including food, fiber and forestry, contributes $70 billion annually to the StateÕs economy, and accounts for 18% of the StateÕs income, and employs over 17% of the workforce; and,
WHEREAS, North Carolina is one of the most diversified agricultural states in the nation and the stateÕs 52,500 farmers grow over 80 different commodities, utilizing 8.6 million of the stateÕs 31 million acres to furnish consumers a dependable and affordable supply of food and fiber; and,
WHEREAS, North Carolina produces more tobacco and sweet potatoes than any other state and ranks second in Christmas tree cash receipts, and the production of hogs and turkeys, ranks twelfth nationally in farm profits with a net farm income of over $2.8 billion and net income per farm in the state is over $53,000; and,
WHEREAS, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is host to many research and development projects, and is home of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service which programs directly support the StateÕs largest industry and 700,000 jobs; and,
WHEREAS, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is the resident to over 29 majors and over 21 minors related to agriculture in North Carolina; now therefore be it,
RESOLVED, the North Carolina State University Student Senate recognizes farmers in North Carolina for their hard work and service to North Carolina State University ; and be it further,
RESOLVED, the North Carolina State University Student Senate commends farmers for all of their service and support of North Carolina State University.
