Resolution 52 A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST DISCRIMINATION AND SUPPORT DIVERSITY AT NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY Short Title: Taking Back NC State Act Sponsors: President Pro Tempore Harrelson (Corresponding), Treasurer Bryson Signatories: Student Body Chief Justice Noble Referred to: Version: Initial Version First Reading: November 17th, 2010 Second Reading: WHEREAS, On October 31st, 2010, offensive speech appeared in the Free Expression Tunnel ; and, WHEREAS, Many students on campus found this to be an inappropriate use of the Free Expression Tunnel; and, WHEREAS, One group of students in particular ÒBlacked OutÓ the tunnel in protest of the offensive and obscene message; and, WHEREAS, The Chancellor released a statement denouncing this improper use of the Free Expression Tunnel and how the N.C. State Community will not stand for actions that offend or threaten our students; and, WHEREAS, Student Government also released a statement which recognized the right of free speech but also stressed the importance of inclusion on campus; and, WHEREAS, The University and the African American Student Advisory Council put on a forum with Chancellor to discuss how N.C. State can better include and educate about diversity; and, WHEREAS, The University had another forum called ÒTunnelvision,Ó which discussed what constitutions a right protected under the First Amendment; and, WHEREAS, The N.C. State Code of Student Conduct sections 14.1.8 and 15.9.4 revolve around what constitutes the creation of a "hostile environment" and the potential for "aggravating factors of misconduct" respectively; now therefore be it resolved RESOLVED, that Student Government urges the University to further promote diversity on campus; and be it further, RESOLVED, that Student Government suggests that the University Administration find a way to include more education about diversity in the each studentÕs curriculum; and be it further resolved, RESOLVED, Student Government hopes to create a method for dealing with issues like this on campus such that University can empower students to ÒTake Back the TunnelÓ and have the quickest response time possible; and be it further, RESOLVED, that Student Government wants to promote an attitude on campus that includes all students regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or any other distinguishing factor.
