A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO OPPOSE THE NORTH CAROLINA LEGISLATURE'S PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

 

 


Short Title: NC Equality Act

WHEREAS, The North Carolina General Assembly passed a proposed amendment to the North Carolina State Constitution on the 13th of September 2011; and,

 

WHEREAS, This proposed amendment would modify the North Carolina State Constitution to discriminatorily ban same-sex marriage, if passed by majority vote in the May 2012 primary; and,

 

WHEREAS, The students of North Carolina State University should not be discriminated against based on age, sex, color, disability, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, race, religion, creed, sexual orientation or any other basis protected by applicable federal, state or local laws; and,

 

WHEREAS, The proposed amendment has vague and untested wording which will result in a significant period of time and state money spent on court cases to determine the meaning of the bill; and,

 

WHEREAS,  North Carolina State University Student Government strongly encourages our state legislature to focus on more pertinent matters at hand including stimulating job growth, hurricane relief, and education; now therefore be it,

 

RESOLVED, that the Student Government of North Carolina State University does not support the proposed constitutional amendment; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED, that the Student Government of North Carolina State University reaffirms its support for equality and tolerance of all; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED, We support all North Carolina State University students and their right to be treated as equal citizens without consideration of the aforementioned list.
