A BILL TO BE ENTILED AN ACT TO ESTABLISH EXPECTATIONS OF THE STUDENT BODY OFFICERS

 

 


Short Title: Student Body Officer Expectations Act

WHEREAS, The mission of NC State Student Government is: “Founded and funded by students, the NC State University Student Government encourages students to express their concerns and ideas, promotes an environment of open discourse and academic excellence, and proactively represents the student voice to the University administration and Board of Trustees through ethical and accountable public service.”; and,

 

WHEREAS,  The Student Body Officer positions in Student Government are vital to the success of the organization and mission of representing all students at NC State University

 

WHEREAS, The Student Body Officer positions are compensated with a stipend to offset any lost income that may incur from taking on this time-consuming and important role; and,

 

WHEREAS, Student Media senior leaders have responsibilities parallel to the Student Body Officer positions in time commitment and service to NC State University students, and Student Media has a compensation policy for their senior leaders that reads:

 

“SENIOR LEADERS:

Technician‘s editor may be paid up to $650 per month as long as he or she meets the following requirements in addition to requirements documented in University Regulation 11.55.6 and the Student Media policy on Academic Progress.

      35 or more hours per week involved in the Technician with at least 10 of those documented during regular business hours

      no other outside employment, paid, part-time or volunteer

      all requirements posted as part of the job description”

 

as stated on http://ncsu.edu/sma/policies/compensation/; and,

 

WHEREAS, Student Body Officers should be held to a high standard of accountability for fulfilling their positions that they are elected to by the student body; now therefore be it,

 

RESOLVED, §1-1.2. shall be amended to read:

 

“§1-1.2. General Qualifications for Student Government Officials.

All Student Government Officials shall be chosen from the Student Body at-large. The Student Body Auditor, as an exception, shall be chosen from any internal or external source as deemed appropriate by the Student Body President. All Student Government Officials must be students in good standing at the time of their appointment or election, and must remain such their entire term in office. Student Government Officials must make their Student Body Officer Position first priority before any other outside employment, paid, part-time, or volunteer. Outside employment, internships, cooperative education, and other extensive time commitments shall be prohibited unless reviewed and approved by the Student Government Advisor.  Additional qualifications for specific offices may be assigned by these statutes.”; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED, That this bill shall take effect upon enrollment.
