WHEREAS, NC State is a founding member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC); and,
WHEREAS, NC State and UNC have played a home-and-home series every year since joining the ACC back in 1953; and,
WHEREAS, to help build a sense of community against a common rival, Student Government has sponsored an annual Campout for tickets to the home State-UNC game; and,
WHEREAS, with Pittsburgh and Syracuse joining the ACC from the Big East conference in the near future, the ACC has seen fit to expand the men’s basketball conference schedule; and,
WHEREAS, under the proposed expansion each school would have a singular primary partner for men’s basketball instead of the current two team structure; and,
WHEREAS, for NC State, this would mean the loss of UNC as a primary basketball partner; and,
WHEREAS, this loss of partnership would mean the loss of a guaranteed home-and-home series with UNC every year; and,
WHEREAS, under this proposed system, while NC State and UNC would play each other every year, they would not play at the opponents home every third year unless each school decided to use one of their limited non-conference games for this historic rivalry; and,
WHEREAS, this would also eliminate Campout as an annual tradition at NC State; now therefore be it,
RESOLVED, that the NC State University Student Senate stands opposed to the current proposed method of including Pittsburgh and Syracuse into the ACC’s men’s basketball scheduling; and be it further,
RESOLVED, that the Senate asks that Athletics Director Deborah Yow work with ACC Commissioner John Swofford and UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham to devise a solution where NC State and UNC play a guaranteed home-and-home series in men’s basketball each year; and be it further,
RESOLVED, that the actions necessary for this to be accomplished be completed before Pittsburgh and Syracuse join the ACC from the Big East; and be it further,
RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be transmitted to Athletics Directors Yow’s and Cunningham’s, and Commissioner Swofford’s offices when this bill is enrolled.
