A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO STATE STUDENT SENATE’S POSITION ON THE STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES FEE

 

 


Short Title: Student Health Services Fee Increase Proposal

WHEREAS, the Student Health Services fee is currently $267.62; and,

 

WHEREAS, the proposed increase for this fee is $9.38, for a total of $277.00 for the 2013-2014 academic school year; and,

 

WHEREAS, $4.08 of the increase would go to State-mandated increases in employee pay, $2.44 goes to the hiring of an additional physical therapist, and $2.87 goes to the hiring of a new counselor; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Student Health Services mission is to “provide affordable, accessible and high quality health care to those eligible for services and to provide a comprehensive disease-prevention and health promotion programs to the NC State University Community;” and,

 

WHEREAS, the Counseling Services mission is to “provide students with counseling services that enable them to cope with personal problems that could impede successful academic performance,” along with other mental health related goals; and,

 

WHEREAS, wait times for counseling appointments can be up to two weeks; and,

 

WHEREAS, with the addition of the orthopedic clinic, Student Health’s Physical Therapy has seen a significant increase in referrals (37% increase in January and 35% increase in February compared to last fiscal year); now therefore be it,

 

RESOLVED, that the Student Senate of North Carolina State University supports efforts to keep students healthy and therefore capable of fully pursuing their academic endeavors; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED, that the Student Senate of North Carolina State University supports the full $9.38 increase; and be it further,

 

RESOLVED, the Student Senate urges the Chancellor and the Fee Review Committee to give consideration to these recommendations.
