A RESOLUTION
TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO STATE STUDENT SENATE’S POSITION ON THE UAB FEE
INCREASE

Short Title: UAB Fee Increase Proposal Act

WHEREAS, the Union Activities Board (UAB) is an organization charged
with the responsibility of planning educational programs and activities for the
entire campus to help students feel connected to the campus community; and,
WHEREAS, the
UAB fee is currently $15.13; and,
WHEREAS, the
proposed increase is $7.37, for a total of $22.50 for the 2013-2014 academic
school year; and,
WHEREAS, $3.58
of this increase would go to upgrading the student theatre with digital
projection equipment; and,
WHEREAS, $3.58 would go to producing the Pack Howl
homecoming concert; and,
WHEREAS, $0.21
would go to mandated salary increases; and,
WHEREAS, the funding for the
Pack Howl Homecoming Concert has formerly come from the Alumni Association;
and,
WHEREAS, with the film industries movement from
35mm prints to digital projection the student theatre will not be able to show
movies made after December 31, 2012 without this upgrade; now therefore be it,
RESOLVED,
there may be opportunities for sponsorships and
fundraising to pay for both the student theatre renovation and the Pack Howl
Homecoming concert; and be it further,
RESOLVED, that the UAB should consider charging admission for the
concert and increasing user fees at the theatre to cover the additional costs;
and be it further,
RESOLVED, the
Student Senate of North Carolina State University approves of raising the Union
Activities Board fee by $0.21 to a total of $15.34 to cover costs of the salary
increases; and be it further,
RESOLVED, that the Student Senate believes that during these times of
economic recession that every office, program, and department on campus,
including UAB, should look to use their current budgets more effectively by
thinking carefully about their programming and mission, and reorganizing their
budgets and spending habits to align with that thinking; and be it further,
RESOLVED, the Student
Senate urges the Chancellor and the Fee Review Committee to give consideration
to these recommendations.
