Attendance:

There were six (6) members (Jasmine Brown, Center, Daughtry, Hayes, Kouba, Stackhouse) present.

There was one (1) member (Maryman) absent.

A quorum was present.

Meeting Overview:

This meeting was called to discuss final questions for Senator Rand.

Meeting Minutes:

Meeting was called to order by Senator Center at 7:35 PM on October 27, 2009.

Crabtree, Green, and Hammond all submitted questions for Senator Rand
Green: I am a strong supporter, as well as many of my constituents in College of Natural Resources, of sustainability programs in N.C. and specifically the recycling initiatives proposed by the Senate. I am just curious if you think that the bottle ban is an enforceable law? And are there any planned campaigns, such as "Click it or Ticket", that will bring awareness to the new law?
Hammond: Where do you stand on the North Carolina Community College System’s decision to allow illegal immigrants to attend any of the state's 58 community colleges?

Public Affairs Committee approves of those questions.

Center: We need more! We will come up with our own
Center: Extended deadline to tomorrow to submit questions…
Kouba: Crabtree question is a “just kidding” question and won’t be considered
Hayes: Can’t we just make questions from the previously decided topics?
Kouba: Maybe we can allow people to ask questions if the Senators are respectful
Center: Parking spot?
Kouba: Will have one in Harris Lot.
Hayes: Each of us should be prepared with a question
Center: Everyone needs to think of questions
Kouba: He will be here around 7pm and someone needs to pick up some snacks… like sandwich trays, 2 liter sodas, bag of chex mix… Regular snacks
Daughtry: Be careful about peanut allergies…
Center: Someone needs to go get snacks=Kouba and Jackie
Hayes: Does Elmo need to be notified for the card?
Center: We should try to be here around 6:45pm
We need to get the name placards from Melinda!!

Additional Questions:

How to deal with major backlash from constituents?--Kouba
How do you balance your family life with your career?--Brown
What is your opinion of the Mandatory Student Health Insurance policy?--Hayes
What do you project for the North Carolina Economy and its recovery?--Stackhouse
How can the college communities bridge better to the legislative community, and what recommendations do you have so we can get more involved?—Daughtry

Timeline of Meeting
Daughtry: Students may get upset with Senator Rand speaking before them
Center: Have Kelli announce that Senator Rand will speak first then the students may speak after if they want to continue discussion on Talley
P.A. Committee agrees.
Daughtry: What if he’s late?
Center: We expect him to be here at 7pm

Misc. Business

Daughtry: Is the Pledge of Allegiance required for students to say? A student emailed asking about it because of their possible interest in Senate affairs as a non-citizen.
Committee: No.
