NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SENATE
89TH SESSION, 2009-2010

COMMITTEE REPORT
Report No. CC-11

RESOLUTION 59

Senator Arialle K. Crabtree submitted the following report regarding Resolution 59, "A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT TO PURSUE AND POTENTIALLY OBTAIN A NEW LIVING MASCOT THAT WITH RESPECT TO TRADITION WOULD BE NAMED LOBO IV ", to the Student Senate on Wednesday, February 17th 2010, on behalf of the Campus Community Committee, and pursuant to its Wednesday, February 17th 2010 recommendations, by general consent:

As provided by Senate Rule, the committee requests that the Senate President place Resolution 59, on the calendar for second reading.

Attendance:

There were seven (7) members (Blanchard, Bower, Center, Crabtree, Heath, Mills, Selzer) present.

There were no members absent.

The following official was also present: S. Wood.

A quorum was present.

Purpose of Legislation:

People know that Student Government supports the addition of a wolf-like dog and reinstate a major tradition at NC State.

Background Information:

In 1945, students bought the first wolf/ coyote named State.

Over the course of North Carolina State University we have had 3 coyote/wolf/dogs.

Debate:

Why that particular breed? It was breed to resemble a wolf and is certified in the state of North Carolina.

Why has this not happened? Over the years the tradition has been lost, but it should be easy to reinstate.

This bill is not intended to mistreat or cage the dog. We have excellent facilitates at NC State University to support this animal and we already house several animals on University property.

Recommendations:

Let the students name the dog.

Investigate possibilities of wait-list for dog.
