COMMITTEE REPORT

Committee Minutes, Friday, April 27th 2012
Senator Kelsey Mills submitted the following report to the Student Senate on Saturday, April 28th 2012, on behalf of the Finance Committee, and pursuant to its Friday, April 27th 2012 recommendations:
Attendance:
There were five (5) members (Gaskins, McDowell, Mills, Patel, Rackl) present. There was also one (1) non-voting member (Murray) present.
There was one (1) member (Tomblin) absent.
The following official was also present: Barker.
A quorum was present.
Meeting Overview:
The committee met for the first time.
The committee heard a request from Emerson Barker on behalf of the University Common Reading Committee for $500 towards purchasing freshman common reading books to give to campus leaders. The committee elected, by general consent, to award the full $500.

Committee members introduced themselves stating name and major.
Chair Mills gave brief overview of Finance committee for new members.
o Current Finance balance approximately $2,295 that will rollover into surplus if not spent by the end of the fiscal year (June 30th)
o We currently have $13,000 budgeted to Finance for the 2012-2013 academic year, but all of these are line itemed—that is, they are intended for already specified uses that we have traditionally allocated funds to
o Last session, the Finance committee had been looking into graduate brick funding and projector or sound system for SORC
University Common Reading Committee Request
Guest Speaker: Emerson Barker, chair elect for University Common Reading Committee:
The funds will be used to give the freshman common reading book to campus leaders who interact with incoming freshmen. (Further information included in the appended document.)
Rackl: Do the Orientation Counselors read this book?
Barker: Yes, some of the books will be distributed to OC’s.
Mills: FYC uses the book for certain assignments.
Gaskins: Management has an intro class that centers around the book.
Committee discussed reach of book on campus and how book is selected.
McDowell motioned to fund the request of $500 in full.
Patel seconds motion.
Motion passes by general consent.
Meeting adjourned at 3:24 pm.
