COMMITTEE REPORT

Committee Minutes, Wednesday, November 13th 2002

Secretary Brandon Whitney submitted the following report on Tuesday, November 19th 2002, on behalf of the University Affairs Committee, and pursuant to its Wednesday, November 13th 2002 recommendations:

Attendance:

There were six (6) Members (Alexander, Carty, Matthews, Ozbolt, Whiteside, Whitney) present.

There were two (2) Members (Danielle D'Haene, Hoffmann) absent.

A quorum was present.

Meeting Minutes:

Guest: Chief Younce; Campus Police

Chief Younce spoke to the Committee about changes in Campus Police:

- 3 new full time officers
- A new van for student patrol
- Discussion of post-game celebration operations
- Increased demand for escorts from 2-3 a night to 25-30 a night
- How Campus Police is helping to save money by not painting the cars

The Committee discussed the role of Campus Police and how the CSI Program has helped to make the campus safer. Chief Younce promised to back the student body in appealing to reinstate the Student Patrol for Fall 2003.


Guest: Dr. Jerry Barker; Director, Student Health Services

Dr. Barker spoke to the Committee about the state of Student Health Services:
Overview of Services:

- 69 staff members; including 6 physicians, 6 physician’s assistants, a physical therapist, a pharmacist, Health Education specialists, and support staff
- $6.5 million budget, mostly from student fees
- Services that are 50%-60% off the general market price
- Lab work 1/3-1/4 of the usual price
Major components:
- Medical (outpatient), 62,000 visits per year
- Physical Therapy, 3500 visits per year
- Travel Clinic
- Gynecology Clinic (new service, look for growth)
- Allergy Clinic
- Lab, 50,000 tests run per year
- Pharmacy, 55,000 prescriptions filled per year
- Health Education (room for growth)
- Counseling Center (15 Professionals)

The Committee discussed with Dr. Barker ways to improve the student body’s awareness of the numerous services that the Health Center offers.

****We also discussed the probability of pursuing some sort of expansion in the next 2-3 years.**** This could include renovations to the current facilities, or possible expansion to a second facility on Centennial Campus.*

After the results of a demographic study currently underway at Student Health Services, Dr. Barker promised that he would come back to us with specific ways that we can help with publicity.
