A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT CONCERNING THE ELECTORAL PROCESS OF THE UNC ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT GOVERNMENTS

WHEREAS, NC State University is a dues paying member of the University of North Carolina Association of Student Governments; and,

WHEREAS, there are sixteen institutions of higher education in the University of North Carolina; and,

WHEREAS, less than thirty delegates from only eight institutions elected an UNC Association of Student Governments President to represent all 137,000 students of the University of North Carolina; and,

WHEREAS, institutions in the University of North Carolina have in place representative bodies of students capable of reaching deliberative decisions in the best interest of their student bodies; now; therefore be it

WHEREAS, under many instances, including during the electoral process, personal relationships taint the voting decisions of the individual delegations; and,

WHEREAS, in particular, blatantly disgraceful lack of professionalism during the electoral process for the officers of the 2000-2001 year--explicitly the voting status of officers not accorded a vote by the ASG Constitution or Bylaws--has inhibited the potential effectiveness of the successful candidates; and,

WHEREAS, the UNC Association of Student Government's electoral process strongly favors candidates who are current leaders in the association; and,

RESOLVED, that the NC State University Student Senate emphatically condemns the electoral process in use by the UNC Association of Student Governments; and, be it further

RESOLVED, that the NC State University Student Senate urges the officers and delegates of the UNC Association of Student Governments to work to create an electoral process that guarantees all constituent institutions a voice and that solicits the opinion of a greater number of students; and, be it further

RESOLVED, until such a time as a more appropriate process can be enacted through the Constitutionally-prescribed methods, the NC State Student Senate mandates the UNC Association of Student Governments to strictly adhere to its Constitution in all matters, particularly election of officers.
