RESOLUTION 05
A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED
An act to provide comment on the proposed changes to the Code of Student Conduct
WHEREAS, the Office of Student Conduct has proposed general revisions to the Code of Student Conduct; and,
WHEREAS, the proposed revisions to the Code allow the University to revoke degrees from alumni for any manner of misconduct while they were students, not just academic integrity misconduct; and,
WHEREAS, the proposed Code revisions allow the imposition of special sanctions for academic integrity violations at the discretion of administrators; and,
WHEREAS, students should have the right to know the penalties that can be applied for misconduct at the same time they learn what constitutes misconduct; and,
WHEREAS, the proposed Code revisions remove the right of a student to have a hearing prior to disciplinary termination from University Housing; and,
WHEREAS, the proposed Code revisions allow disciplinary process to be invoked at any time between an individual’s acceptance of enrollment and his or her graduation, regardless of the individual’s actual present enrollment status; and,
WHEREAS, individuals with certain criminal records are denied admission to the University; and,
WHEREAS, a code of conduct should be clearly worded so that students can understand the effect of clauses without consulting experts; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate encourages the University to reduce ambiguities in the Code of Student Conduct; and, be it further,
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate expresses concern over many of the proposed changes to the Code of Student Conduct, particularly:
(1) the power to revoke degrees for non-academic misconduct;
(2) the power of special discretionary sanctioning; and
(3) the elimination of the right to a hearing prior to disciplinary eviction from Housing; and be it further
RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate urges the University to apply the same disciplinary standards to students not actively enrolled as to individuals seeking admission.
I hereby certify that this resolution was read twice and adopted by consent in the North Carolina State University Student Senate, this 6th day of June 2002.
