A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED

An act to Call For Fair Written Regulation of Publicity Chalking on Campus

WHEREAS,   North Carolina State University currently maintains policies or regulations concerning solicitation, postering, and painting on campus; and,

 

WHEREAS,   a regulation concerning appropriate use of sidewalk chalk either does not exist or is not written in an any obvious fashion; and,

 

WHEREAS,   sidewalk chalk is an excellent inexpensive temporary way for student groups to publicize events; and,

 

WHEREAS,   sidewalk chalk that has been placed on weather-sheltered vertical surfaces quickly becomes an unsightly detractor to the professional appearance of the campus; and,

 

WHEREAS,   a written regulation on chalking can both protect the right of students to use the medium while also providing a consistent definition of abuse thereof; now, therefore be it,

 

RESOLVED,  that the North Carolina State University Student Senate urges the University to adopt a regulation concerning chalking on campus, specifically guaranteeing the continued use of sidewalk chalk for advertising on exposed horizontal surfaces, but banning its use on vertical and unexposed surfaces.
