A RESOLUTION TO BE ENTITLED

An act TO SUPPORT A TEN DOLLAR  FEE INCREASE FOR BUILDING REPAIRS FOR THE NCSU STUDENT CENTER

WHEREAS,   Article IX, Section 9 of the N.C. Constitution states, “The General Assembly shall provide that the benefits of The University of North Carolina and other public institutions of higher education, as far as practicable, be extended to the people of the State free of expense;” and,

 

WHEREAS,   the UNC Board of Governors has extended “free as far as practicable” to all charges exacted by the state's 16 public universities, including student fee; and,

 

WHEREAS,   the NCSU Student Centers are requesting a ten dollar amount for building repairs; and,

 

WHEREAS,   this money is needed to help obtain a multi-million dollar repair loan; and,

 

WHEREAS,   due to Facilities Condition Assessment, code deficiencies were found in the student centers; and,

 

WHEREAS,   Student Center Buildings: Thompson, Talley, Price, and Witherspoon are in need of repairs to stay current with Fire and Life Safety Codes; and,

 

WHEREAS,   repairs need to be done in a timely manner (1-2 years) to avoid adverse rulings by the State Department of Insurance; and,

 

WHEREAS,   if Thompson Theater is not repaired soon it might have to be closed; and,

 

WHEREAS,   these buildings are owned by University Student Centers making them ineligible for state bonds or any other source of funding outside of private donations; now, therefore be it

 

RESOLVED,  that the North Carolina State University Student Senate supports adoption of a ten dollar fee increase for the NCSU Student Center building repair funds.
