WHEREAS, the Campus Security Task Force recently presented a requirement to the University Council that calls for students, faculty, and staff to carry University identification on campus; and,

WHEREAS, the claim is that requiring a University ID on campus would reduce the crime rate on campus; and,

WHEREAS,the regulation operates under the belief that if a person enters a building and is asked to show some ID then they would be less likely to commit any crimes on campus as well as a deterrent to criminals off-campus; and,

WHEREAS, the common reason a student carries their ID is to be able to eat in the dining halls on campus, and;

WHEREAS, off-campus students more commonly do not eat in the dining halls and only carry their ID on them if they just have it or need it for some reason, and;

WHEREAS, asking student, faculty, or staff to question other students, faculty, and staff about providing ID invites an open door for profiling and prejudices, and;

WHEREAS, the most high profile crimes on campus in the past year have been committed by on campus students who would have had the proper identification, and;

WHEREAS, conflict is created more so when a person shows their suspicion of another person when questioning them about whether or not they belong on campus, and;

WHEREAS, many students invite guest to come visit them at the University and these guest would be discouraged from doing so if this were enforced, and;

WHEREAS, there appears to be no plan for enforcement which gives breath to the notion that this requirement is a facade that will not keep students safer, and;

WHEREAS, we acknowledge that there are areas of our campus that need to have some sort of

check on it but feel like this is a poor way to go about it, now therefore be it;

RESOLVED, that the North Carolina State University Student Senate does not support the requirement for all students, faculty, & staff to carry a University ID everywhere they go on campus and encourages the University to find a more substantial, realistic way to keep our campus safer.
